Price Of Membership
With a golf membership at the prestigious Portland Golf Club, you’ll be spending about as much as you would at the Venetian or The Dunes, two other luxurious golf clubs in the city. The cost per year for a regular golfer is $96,840, including a $5,000 initiation fee. If you want to play at night, it’ll cost you an additional $14,000 per year.
Location
The Portland Golf Club is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the world. While the other clubs we mentioned are in the city, the Portland Golf Club is actually located in suburbs outside of Portland. To get there, you have to pay for a parking pass (daily parking fees vary from $25 to $50) and get a membership card. Since it’s in the suburbs, you’ll have to take the metro rail to the Beaverton or Tigard stops, and then walk a few minutes to the entrance. From there, you’ll have to walk up to the 6th hole. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it’s not a bad walk at all (10 minutes or so).
Golf Course
The golf course at the Portland Golf Club is world class. With a record-breaking score of 68, it is officially the longest and the second-most-difficult course in North America. The other prominent course in the area is the Woodstock Golf Club, which was originally founded in 1899 and is still around today. Woodstock is a par 71 course that is an easy walk from the Portland Airport. It’s an 18-hole course, but if you want to play a quick nine holes before you fly back home, you can do that on site too. Between the two courses, you’re looking at a grand total of $100,000 worth of golf in the Portland area, single-handedly putting golfers from Maine to California in the financials. (To put this into perspective, the total combined course fees at both clubs is $160,000. This is a heavy price to pay for a day of golf.)
Amenities
Besides the world-class golf courses, the Portland Golf Club also has a very nice and luxurious club house. The dining room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with multiple menus to choose from. If you want, you can also have a drink at the bar before or after your round. In the summertime, they sometimes have themed nights and specials available, like steak or seafood. The bar also has an outdoor seating area with tables and umbrellas for when the weather is nice. In the wintertime, they often have fireplace and games available, so you can enjoy a nice chat with a fireplace and a drink in hand.
What’s not to like? With all that luxury, you’re bound to have questions. So here are the answers.
Is It Worth It?
The cost for a year of golf at the prestigious Portland Golf Club is very high. Even if you’re a fanatic who plays 18 holes every day, it’s still not cheap. The other two clubs we mentioned have much more affordable prices. At Venetian, which is also located in Portland, you can have a year pass for $75,000; at The Dunes, which is a bit farther south in Clackamas, you can have a year pass for $74,500. If that’s too rich for you, you can always play a quick nine holes at Woodstock (and get your $5,000 back as long as you stay for lunch or dinner), or even better, at one of the many Public Golf Courses in the area that don’t require a membership (golflink.com will give you the contact info for the nearest public course).
So then, is it worth it? Depends on your situation. If you’re looking for a fun day out with your friends and family, the Portland Golf Club is completely worth it. If you want to save a little bit of money, Woodstock and the Public Golf Courses in the area are very good alternatives. And if you’re looking for a romantic getaway for your 20th wedding anniversary, you may want to choose a different club. Their wedding and anniversary packages are very expensive, costing $250,000 and $125,000 respectively. You may want to consider one of the many luxurious and prestigious spas or resorts in the Portland area instead, where you can have a massage, facial treatment, and enjoy some dinner with your loved one.
