One of the club founders explained: โWe met at school and instantly became lifelong friends. We bonded over our shared love of golf and decided to create a space where our friendship could grow.โ
The group wanted to design a golf course that would be challenging yet fair to all players. To ensure that no matter what skill level a player may have, they would have an enjoyable and rewarding golf experience. With that in mind, the five friends worked together to plan and design the Secession Golf Club. The result is a challenging course that combines the best of a country club and a municipal course. Located in an idyllic setting within walking distance of downtown Ottawa, Canada, the Secession Golf Club provides a truly unique and unforgettable golf experience.
The club plays host to various events throughout the year, including a popular steak night on Tuesdays and a vintage car exhibition on Saturdays. In addition, the weekly golf league and a variety of social events are open to all members. The Design Process
The Secession Golf Club isn’t your usual golf club. Instead of following the usual formula of a long fairway with a green, they wanted to experiment with different golf course styles. After all, nobody plays the same way all the time, especially on a golf course (we’re sure you’ll agree).
So, the designers worked hard to come up with a unique, 18-hole layout that would challenge the best golfer in the world. To achieve that goal, they drew inspiration from everywhere, including Scotland, where they spent a lot of time while growing up. One of their course designer’s inspirations was the famous Muirfield course in Ireland, which was originally designed by Old Tom Morris in 1872. He was a legend in his day and is still remembered for designing one of the most iconic golf courses of all time.
Inspired by that course, the golfers at the Secession Golf Club will travel down a long, fairway-like pathway that takes them through the forest and up to the top of a small hill. From there they’ll gaze down on a magnificent valley that houses the Ottawa River and the city’s iconic Rideau Canal.
When they reach the bottom of that hill, the golfers will enter another long, fairway-like pathway that leads them to a more open space near the clubhouse. As they come out of that wooded area and onto a fairway, they’ll get a great view of the entire golf course. It’s not an ordinary fairway, either; it’s actually two parallel fairways that cross each other at 40ห angles. The result is a thrilling experience for all golfers, especially those who enjoy a challenge.
The Geography
The golfers at the Secession Golf Club are treated to some of the best views in all of Ottawa. Those interested in geography may be familiar with the location as it has a significant impact on Canadian and American geography. Just beyond the golf course is the Canadian Parliament Buildings, while the United States embassy, along with the Peace Bridge, are just a few minutes away. It’s hard to miss the location if you’re driving or walking to work.
The city was originally settled by British Loyalists in the 18th century. The area was designated a national historic site in 1987.
