How To Keep Golf Club Face Closed? [Updated!]

I am sure you have all seen the memes on social media about the supposed ‘secret’ to having a long and successful golf game. Most commonly, the meme will either show a picture of an open golf club face with the caption, ‘the key to a long and successful golf game is…’ or ‘keep your golf club face closed’. While the former may be true for certain swing styles and/or courses, the latter is far from being the case. The goal of this article is to shed some light on this so-called ‘golfing mystery’ and explain why keeping the club face closed may not always be the best idea.

Why Do People Say That Keeping The Club Face Closed Is The Key To Having A Long And Successful Golf Game?

There are several reasons why people may believe that keeping the club face closed is the key to having a long and successful golf game. First, closing the club face reduces the view of the ball as it travels toward the golfer. As a result, it may cause the golfer to hit the ball straighter and further. Second, closing the club face also reduces the wind speed, which in turn makes the shot less turbulent, a factor that contributes to better shot accuracy. Third, keeping the club face closed also means that the golfers will not be subjected to the elements, which may improve their game.

Is It Better To Keep The Club Face Closed Or Open?

While the above points may illustrate why one would want to keep the club face closed, it does not necessarily follow that the opposite is true. In fact, there are instances when it may be preferable to have the club face open. Let us consider a few examples.

Firstly, if one is hitting into the wind, then there is no question that one should leave the club face open so that the batter can see the ball as it approaches. This is because, usually, the farther back the hitter stands from the ball, the more severe is the wind effect. Hence, it is always better to ‘play the wind’ rather than ‘hide from the wind’!

Secondly, if one is playing a course that is susceptible to the conditions, then it would be advisable to keep the club face open. This is because, in such instances, it may be preferable to take advantage of the environment to the fullest. For example, if it is raining and/or blowing hard, then it would be best to have the club face open so that the rain and wind does not obscure the view of the ball. This is especially important if one is on a course that is not fully enclosed by buildings or trees, as it may otherwise become dangerous to play. In these instances, people may mistakenly assume that, because it is so windy or rainy, they should leave the club face open, as opposed to closed. However, this is rarely the case, as there are other factors to be considered such as terrain and the placement of the bunker or hazard in question.

How To Keep Golf Club Face Closed?

So, how can one keep the club face closed? There are several ways to do this, but none of them are especially convenient. First, one can always wear a mask while golfing to keep the face closed. However, this may be difficult to do if one is not wearing a mask already, as it may obstruct the view of the ball and make it more difficult to achieve a perfect swing. Second, one can always choose to play into the breeze or on a breezy day. In these instances, it is advisable to keep the club face closed, as the wind will not cause any damage to your score.

Third, one can always choose to stand closer to the ball, as this reduces the wind effect. Fourth, if one is in the fairway, one can always choose to walk closer to the ball as this also reduces the wind effect. Fifth, and last but not least, if it is hot out and/or you are walking toward the green, then it is always better to open the club face as this will allow heat to escape and reduce the chance of you overheating. Of course, if one is not playing a particularly long course, then it is usually better to leave the club face open. Ultimately, it depends on the course and the conditions under which one is playing. But, in general, it is preferable to keep the club face closed.

Is It Better To Play On An Incline Or Decline?

Another factor that can influence the distance of a shot is the slope of the terrain upon which one is playing. Hills and valleys can affect the distance that a ball will travel, depending on the angle at which one is hitting it. The slope of the land will increase or decrease the distance that the ball will travel, as compared to the horizontal. For example, if one is playing on an incline, then it will be relatively easier to hit the ball longer. The reason for this is that the ball will travel higher before it starts descending. This means that, typically, one will need to push somewhat harder to maintain the same velocity as compared to playing on a flat surface. This is because, usually, the higher the altitude, the more effort that will be required to maintain a constant speed. So, if one plays on an incline, then it is advisable to pull back somewhat on the backswing to compensate for the increased distance caused by the rise of the terrain.

What Is The Difference Between Long And Short Shots?

To put it simply, the term ‘long shot’ refers to hitting the ball farther than usual, while a ‘short shot’ refers to hitting the ball closer to the hole than one normally does. Now, it must be noted that there are instances when hitting the ball closer is preferable to hitting it farther. For example, on some courses and/or under certain conditions, hitting the ball closer may entitle the golfer to a better score. However, this does not mean that all short shots are good, as there are instances when hitting the ball farther will prove to be the better option. This is because, usually, the farther back the golfer stands from the ball, the greater the wind effect will be. In these instances, the golfer will need to compensate for the increased wind by hitting the ball farther. So, in general, it is preferable to hit the ball shorter when one is playing into the wind, and longer when sailing into the breeze or on a flat surface. This way, one can ensure that their score is not significantly affected by the conditions under which they are playing, and can improve their game accordingly.

How Is One’s Swing Affected By Playing On Different Surfaces?

The surface that one is hitting upon will also influence the way that they hit the ball. While there are instances when one can achieve a longer reach by hitting on a hard surface, there are also instances when a softer surface will prove to be beneficial. The key is to find what feels most comfortable to the individual golfer. This will in turn determine the way in which they play and consequently affect the score that they achieve. Sometimes, one needs to try a couple of different surfaces to find the one that suits them best. This is why it is always preferable to experiment with different surfaces before making a decision. Ultimately, it is all about finding what feels right to the individual golfer and sticking with it. This way, one can improve their game and minimize the effect that the surface has on it.

What About Playing With Different Strokes?

When golfing, one commonly encounters various types of strokes, which are governed by the physical nature of the individual using them. For example, spinners tend to work the ball rotationally on the course, while straights typically rely more on their forward motion to cover the ground. If one is using a particular style of stroke, then it is important to utilize it consistently. This will prove to be beneficial to one’s game as it will ensure that the style is not ‘over’ used and the individual becomes predictable. It is always preferable to use the same style of stroke until one improves upon it, at which point they should switch to the more effective style. The key is to find what works best for the individual and utilize it consistently. In this way, one’s game will improve and become more enjoyable, regardless of the style that one uses.
