The Colonial is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. Held annually in New York City, it was first held in 1914 and has continued uninterrupted since then. This year will be the 98th installment of the tournament and will take place at the world-famous Bethpage Black golf course from April 13-16, 2022.
The Colonial is one of the few premier golf tournaments to still be played in April even though the new golf season had just begun. In fact, the tournament started moving forward with the rest of the golfing world a few weeks earlier than usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tournament’s organizers worked hard to ensure that their iconic event would go ahead as planned during these troubled times, and they were able to do so by moving the tournament’s start time a few hours earlier and limiting the number of participants. The results were truly stellar, with the winner taking home more than just the ยฃ30,000 first prize. Here, we’ll explore the origins of the Colonial, who will walk away with the trophy this year, and how the organizers handled the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that The Colonial would go ahead as usual.

A Brief History Of The Tournament
The Colonial is one of the original golf tournaments. Organized by Harry Vaneck, a New York City banker, it was originally meant to be a simple golf outing for the upper class. However, the idea quickly took root and eventually grew into one of the most respected events in all of golf. The first tournament was held in October 1914, not long after the sport had become an Olympic event and two months after the start of WWI. For the next seven years, the tournament was held annually in April on private courses in New York City. In 1921 the tournament was open to the public and has since then been held every year in early April.
Over the years, changes have been made to the golf tournament to make it more appealing to the players. For example, in 1950, the trophy for the tournament was redesigned and changed from a cricket bat to a U.S. Golf Association (USGA) trophy. Another modification came in 1974 when, due to growing concerns about air pollution, the tournament was moved to a nearby suburb and was played on a temporary golf course. Finally, in 2006, the Bethpage Black course was selected as the permanent home of the tournament.
The Colonial And COVID-19
The Colonial was one of the first sports events to be cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The organizers made the decision in light of New York State’s โSafer At Homeโ guidelines that recommended limiting large gatherings and events for the time being. In a post on the tournament’s website, organizers revealed that the tournament was looking to reschedule the event for next year.
However, the outbreak of COVID-19 was not the only factor that contributed to the cancellation of The Colonial. According to an article published by ESPN in April 2021, the organizers also decided to hold off on the tournament due to financial concerns. Specifically, the organizers cited the โloss of revenue from canceled sporting events and closed restaurantsโ as a result of the pandemic as the reason for their decision.
The outbreak of COVID-19 came at a bad time for the golf tournament. Bethpage Black, the site of the upcoming tournament, is the most famous of all the golf courses in New York City. In fact, it is one of the most famous courses in the world. It is also notoriously difficult and has hosted the last three U.S. Opens, as well as the 1968 and 1972 PGA Championships. To say that the course is popular is an understatement. It is considered to be one of the โfavorites’ among professional golfers. Getting a tee time there is akin to getting an appointment with destiny.
Despite the difficult and iconic nature of the course, it is not safe to assume that everyone will be able to play there any time soon. In fact, the organizers of the tournament have chosen to move the start time of the event forward by a few hours to ensure that those with COVID-19 and those who are at risk of getting the infection can still play. The additional time will also allow the organizers to sanitize the area around the course before and after every player’s round.
The Choice Of Location
One of the primary reasons for the location of the tournament is the fact that Bethpage Black is one of the most famous golf courses in the world. It was designed by the legendary Donald Ross and was named after his son, Theodore, who tragically died in the First World War. The course is considered to be one of the most challenging sports venues in the United States and has hosted more than its fair share of prestigious events, including the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, and Masters Tournament. It is also the site of the FBI’s International Golf Day celebration, which takes place every year in March.
Bethpage Black is located in Roslyn, New York, a small suburb of New York City. The course was originally built for families and is located in a peaceful and scenic area with abundant wildlife. It was originally a nine-hole course, but was expanded to its current 18-hole configuration in 1922.
Playing Conditions
Another key factor that makes the tournament so special is the impeccable condition of the courses that are used for it. The tournament organizers do an amazing job of maintaining the courses’ pristine condition and ensure that every element โ from the greens to the fairways โ are spotlessly trimmed. This year will mark the 98th Annual Colonial Tournament and every year the organizers do things a little differently to ensure that the event is as perfect as it can be. For example, in years past, wooden practice balls were supplied to players. However, in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19, organizers will now supply plastic balls.
The courses used for the tournament are also of paramount importance. From the moment you arrive at the tournament, it is clear that you are dealing with a professionally run event. The carts are washed and sanitized before and after every use and the food is of a high quality. One look at the menu for the tournament and you will realize that this is not your typical golf tournament fare. The organizers pride themselves on providing world-class amenities while also sticking to the safety guidelines set forth by the state and the CDC. All of this adds up to make for an outstanding sporting experience for participants and spectators alike.
The Format Of The Tournament
The Colonial is an 18-hole golf tournament open to the public. The format for the event is the same as that for a regular U.S. Open. There are four days of preliminary rounds called โqualifying’, with the top 64 participants advancing to the next stage.
The following two days are divided into four groups, with each group playing a round of matches against the other groups. The four groups are played in a rotational format with each group playing each other once. The winners of these six rounds go through to the โFinal Four’ which sees the remaining four players shoot for the title. As in a regular U.S. Open, the format allows for plenty of rest and relaxation during the off-season for the golfers who participate.
The remaining two days are for the โFinal Four’, which is comprised of the semi-finals and the final. Matches for these rounds are contested under the rules of โbest-of-seven’ with the victor progressing to the next stage. The remaining two players then play a four-hole playoff to determine the championship.
As you can see, there are a lot of similarities between a regular U.S. Open and The Colonial. The only real difference is that, in a regular U.S. Open, the players are not supposed to fraternize with one another during the tournament. In The Colonial, social distancing is a key consideration and players are allowed to visit the tournament’s restaurant and bar, make phone calls, and travel to the restrooms as needed. Although this may seem like a small difference, the fact that the organizers have to adhere to certain protocols for the sake of public safety makes it a not-so-small difference indeed.
